Which two characters are used to represent exact opposites in the spectrum of good and evil?
A: Lucie and Madame Defarge. Lucie's character is used to represent good, while Madame Defarge is evil. Lucie, with her golden hair and light, cheerful heart throughout the book brings happiness and shows goodness. She has everything seen at that time as the perfect vision of beauty. Madame Defarge, however, is shown as dark and evil in stark contrast to Lucie. She has a dark past and bloodthirsty for that of Everemonde's family. This contrast is most clearly shown in the third book when the two are finally shown conversing. Why is Sydney Carton willing to sacrifice his life in place of Charles Darnay? A: Carton loves Lucie more than anything and only wants to see her happy. Although since his first appearance, he has completely cleaned up his act and made some repairs to his broken life, he can't stand to see Lucie and her daughter so distraught without Darnay. For this reason, he chooses to save them and reunite them with Darnay. Is Sydney Cartons death heroic? Did he redeem himself for his previous actions? A: In the beginning of the novel Sydney Carton was not a likable character. He was rude and a slob. He didn't like anybody and nobody liked him. Throughout the novel Sydney's character developments more positive characteristics because of his love for Lucie. All Sydney wanted was for Lucie to be happy, and if her happiness came from Charles Darnay, then Sydney would do everything in his power to make sure they were together. In the conclusion of the book, Sydney's actions enable Charles and Lucie to be together. The choice that he made was a bold, yet heroic one. So, yes Sydney did redeem himself for his previous actions, because he wouldn't have done it, if he didn't care. Is revenge ever acceptable? A: Madame Defarge seeks revenge on the Darnay family because of actions that Charles' father and uncle carried out. Since, Madame Defarge is a bloodthirsty and evil character in the novel, all she wants in life is to avenge her own family. Even though the people she seeks revenge on are not the ones who committed the crime, she justifies it because they are part of the family that caused grief to her own. Revenge is never acceptable. You should not solve your problems by taking it out on other people, even if they were part of the problem. Being vicious and cruel is never the answer. Sooner or later, their actions or your actions will catch up to you and them, and you do not want to be on the wrong side of guillotine. In A Tale of Two Cities, who in the novel is the most honorable character and why? A: Charles Dickens portrays Sydney Carton as an unhappy, miserable, yet brillent character. Sydney Carton definitely has his faults, and you come to realize that quickly once he is introduced in the novel. Yet, throughout the novel he develops characteristics that make him appear more likable. When Carton decided to sacrifice himself in place of a friend, you see Carton's character differently. Carton did what he thought was honorable to the Darnay's. Carton scarifies everything, so the love of his life can be happy. Even in knowing he could probably have gotten Lucie after Darnay's death. So because of his willing sacrifice, Carton receives the most honorable character tittle. |
